What is there to say about Matthew Kuhns… well he has a very unique sense of humor (one that I find refreshing), he’s extremely bright, and he loves photography. Those are plenty of ingredients for me to get him on the Photography Roundtable Podcast.
It’s not everyday that you get to talk to someone who is both an aerospace engineer (no, he has not been to space, I asked), a photographer, and an applications developer. It sounds to me like he’s extremely busy. Matthew seems to accomplish everything in stride, though.
Not only does Matthew Kuhns take some amazing nature and landscape photographs, but he has also developed the SkyFire app. Through a series of algorithms (e=mc2) Matthew has built SkyFire to tell photographers if there will be a great sunrise or sunset in their area the following day. Now, before you write this off, it’s over 85% accurate. Take that Lelan Statom (he’s the local weather man I don’t rely on).
If you’re a photographer who loves sunrise and sunset colors, or you’re a photographer who enjoys to sleep in, you should definitely check out Matthew’s SkyFire app.
To be honest, I think there is a huge market for any application like SkyFire. With so many mirrorless cameras starting to include WiFi capabilities and downloadable apps, don’t be surprised if you see SkyFire available for download to your DSLR. I’m not a wizard (yet), but I think I can see the future on this one.
What’s in this episode:
- What does it take to get to space? A lot of money.
- How Matthew Kuhns balances aerospace work and photography
- The development of SkyFire
- What is SkyFire, anyways
- What does the future hold for applications like SkyFire?
