I am a strong believer in sharing your photos with the world no matter how or when you do it. I mean, let’s get serious, if all you do is take a photo and keep it to yourself, it just takes up space on your hard drive. I would assume a lot of photographers are afraid of people not liking their work. Well, some won’t. BUT, some will!
One of the great venues to showcase your work is through art shows. Photography that is usually featured in art shows is categorized as fine art photography. That’s just a fancy term for well composed photographs. Now, you can’t just walk into an art show and start hanging up your work like a crazy person. There is a science behind how to display photos in art shows.
The most important thing that you must remember when you are displaying your photos is that organization matters. People who visit art shows to buy work usually make two rounds through the art booths. The first time they walk through they are taking mental notes as to who they will come back to see. During the second walk through, they return to their favorite booths to take a closer look at the art work for a potential purchase.
So, how do you get art buyers to come back to your booth? Organization. You need to choose a pattern that will be very organized and straight forward. If your photos are all over the place, it will look like you hung all of your prints as fast as possible just to get through it. And that’s probably because you did!
Hanging your photos in a neat and organized manner will not only make your booth look organized, but it will draw people’s attention to your work because of the straight lines and perfectly spaced photos. They will notice you took the time to display your work beautifully because you care so much about your photos.
During my first art show I noticed the artist displaying his paintings across from me was getting a lot of attention. Was his work the best? Not necessarily. But, all of his art work was spaced exactly the same and his frames were perfectly in line with one another. When someone bought a painting, he hung another in its place that was exactly the same size.
This artist did his research. He knew that a well organized booth displays work that is easy to look at, easy to navigate, easy to see prices, and easy to purchase. Needless to say, he made a lot of money over a three day period.
A Few Organization Tips…
A great way to keep your art organized is to group equal sizes of prints together. Grouping the same size prints will let people see how different photos look in one particular size. They can easily make a choice as to which photo they would like to purchase in that size.
Another way to make your booth visually pleasing is to display in threes. Having three prints of equal size in a line is very easy to look at, especially if all three photos are of the same subject. It’s a great way to showcase a series of photos that you have worked on.
A great way to organize your booth to sell larger prints is to place the larger size next to a lot of smaller sized prints. The size difference will amaze patrons! Make sure, though, you keep in mind to line all of your frames up neatly.
Lastly, use the entire display area. It’s very important to fill the entire space that you are provided with to maintain the idea that you have a lot of work in your portfolio and you have prepared for the show!
